Supporting a Grieving Co-Worker
• Attend the funeral - Even if you did not know the deceased, it is appropriate to attend the funeral if it is local.  Funerals are for the living and your presence with be great support to you co-worker. • When sending a gift, it is most appropriate to have the gift shipped or hand delivered to the recipient's home.  It is best not to place cards or gifts on your co-workers desk. • If a card is sent around the office for signatures, make sure that all employees are given the opportunity to sign.  It's easy for someone to be missed.  If there are close friendships within the office, it a gift/card may be sent in addition to the group card/gift. • It's important to let your co-worker know that you're thinking of them.  It may feel awkward and maybe you can't find the right words to express your sympathy, but in those instances, a simple "I'm sorry" and a hug will convey your condolences appropriately.
